I am glad that we are all back and healthy.  Last week was a rough one with lots for upset stomachs.  We didn’t get a lot of our goals accomplished on Thursday or Friday because of all the illness.

  • Please collect Box Tops for Education clippings. A sheet is being sent home in your child’s folder to collect the clippings on.
  • Would you like to come in and share your family’s holiday tradition? Please send me an email if you are interested in sharing artifacts or foods that are unique to your family during the winter season. I would like to schedule families to share at the end of the day (3pm?)
  • This week is Spirit Week…. Monday– Crazy Day, Crazy Colorful Clothes, Crazy Socks Crazy Hair Tuesday – Pajama & Stuff Animal and Movie (3-3:45) Day Wednesday – Education T-Shirt Day, Wear any school t-shirt or hoodie Thursday– Ugly/Beautiful Winter Sweater Contest Day (Prizes awarded in class) Friday – Twin or Jean Day

This week we will read The Thing Lou Couldn’t Do. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will continue to identify character traits that support a growth mind set and perseverance.

Sight Words: had, not, but, what, all

We began How-To writing last week. Students brainstormed things they knew how to do. This week we will work on writing what materials are needed and detailed step-by-step instructions. We will put our writing in booklets at the end of the week. I am sending home a list of goals for the unit.

This week, we will complete an Open Response prompt that focuses on the right way to measure a marker. Students will have an exploration day that includes building with base 10 blocks, collecting data on a tally chart and displaying on a bar graph and drawing and naming 2-D geometric shapes.

We will continue to discuss family traditions. We will read a Time for Kids: Money Matters. In science we will make use drop chambers to identify sounds and use tuning forks to watch sound in action. We will watch Magic School Bus Haunted House, which focuses on sound vibrations, high and low sounds and loud and soft sounds.
