• Please send an extra pair of pants to school if your child is not coming to school with snow pants. Also every child should keep an extra pair of socks in the backpack. Today we had lots of wet pants and feet. We also had lots of fun in the snow. I guess “snow swimming” is the reason behind all the wet bottoms!
• Report cards went home today. Please contact me if you have questions about either report. I am happy to meet on Mondays or Fridays at 8:45am.
• We will exchange Valentine’s Day cards on February 14th at the end of the day. It is not necessary for your child to bring cards, but if they do, please ensure that every classmate receives a card. Candy/treats are not permitted.
• The 100th day of school is now on Friday, February 16th. The project I had originally planned I am canceling because I was unable to get everything out last Friday allowing the weekend to finish.

READER’S WORKSHOP/Daily 5
This week we will read A Different Pond. This quarter first graders will hear many stories that feature diverse characters. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will continue to identify character traits that support a growth mind set and perseverance. We will learn about words with a Y at the end sounding like an E. Words went home in the homework folder.
Sight Words: long, very, little, words, after
Vocabulary: tackle, bait, callous, lure, trespass
WRITER’S WORKSHOP
We are continuing on with our unit on All About Writing. Students will begin working on an All About Me book with table of contents, introduction, conclusion and cover page.
MATH
This week, we will take the unit 5 assessment, originally planned for last Friday. We will begin unit 6 in math. The unit focuses on time using the hour hand only, more double digit number stories, doubles facts and near doubles.
SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE
In science we will complete an alternative STEM unit while we wait for our necessary supplies to arrive. We will learn about Abraham Lincoln, Maya Angelou and Jean-Michel Basquiat this week.
