I can’t believe the school year is half over!   I love seeing all the changes that occur throughout the year.    This week and next Ms. Jefferson will be doing her lead teaching time in our class before moving on to another placement in Chicago.   In addition, I would like to welcome Travis Howard and family to Room 114.

• Thanks to the families that attended Raise a Glass for Ray!
• Students will be permitted to play outdoors on Mondays and Fridays until 8:55am. Students will be escorted in shortly before 9am.
• Report cards will go home this week. Please contact me if you have questions about either report. I am happy to meet on Mondays or Fridays at 8:45am.
• We will exchange Valentine’s Day cards on February 14th at the end of the day. It is not necessary for your child to bring cards, but if they do, please ensure that every classmate receives a card (25 students). Please do not address the cards, it is much easier to pass them out without a name. Candy/treats are not permitted.
• The 100th day of school is coming up on the 15th. Please begin to think about a collection of 100 small items. Students will complete a set of clues describing their object and will present to the class. More to come on this project in the coming days.

This week we will read Chik Chak Shabbat. This quarter first graders will hear many stories that feature diverse characters. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will continue to identify character traits that support a growth mind set and perseverance.
We will learn about long vowel words with an e at the end. I am going to begin sending home a copy of the words we work on in class. Students are tested on some of these words, as well as other words with a similar pattern.
Sight Words: way, find, use, may, water
Vocabulary: Cholent, waff, hurl, shabbat

We are continuing on with our unit on All About Writing. Students have now began to write their facts in booklets and are adding details, as well as important vocabulary that pertain to their topic. Students will add diagrams, table of contents and other non-fiction text features this week. Students will work on organizing facts and writing strong introductions.

This week, we will continue with unit 5 in math. Students will practice creating comparison number stories. We will play the difference game. We will work more with the animal cards to compare weights and heights and add double digit numbers using the number grid and base 10 blocks. Students will also find the difference in animal weights. Students will take the unit 5 assessment at the end of the week.

In science we will use begin the second part of the science unit on sound and light. We will learn about Maya Angelou, Effa Manley and Jackie Robinson this week.
