This week we will read Tia Isa’s Wants a Car and A Chair For My Mother. This quarter first graders will hear many stories that feature diverse characters. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will continue to identify character traits that support a growth mind set and perseverance. We will learn about words with the -or sound.

We are starting a new unit of non-fiction writing this week called Opinion writing. Our focus this week will be thinking of as many reasons as we can and writing strong introductions.
This week, we will continue with unit 6 in math and take the assessment on Friday. We will learn about equivalent numbers with a new routine called name collection boxes. Students will practice more exchanges with a new game called penny, dime, dollar exchange. We will play fishing for 10 and the difference game.
In science we will continue with the second part of the science unit on sound and light. Students will explore light and mirrors and discuss how light can be reflected to a new position. In Social studies we will learn more about Dr. Seuss. We will also learn about Stevie Wonder and discuss how different families live around the world.
