I hope you all had a lovely spring break! The students seem rested and relaxed and happy to be back.  I could use another week off!

  • Please send a snack for 25 students.
  • Information went home today regarding our history project.  After sending the information home I realized there was an error.   There will be no form ot order a copy of the finished project.  Also all interviews must be turned in by next Monday.  We will spend the week working on the project and share it in class by Friday.
  • This week we will begin Library as our next specials rotation.
  • Please sign up for the Ray School Walk-a-Thon.  The money raised goes toward providing recess support.   Special thanks to Oliver, Sam, Edie and Sayira for already creating their fundraising page.  On Friday I will have a special treat for all students that have created a page by Thursday night. 

 READER’S WORKSHOP:

This week we will read several books by Chris Van Allsburg. We will continue to discuss elements that make Van Allsburg’s books unique and interesting. Students will write about their favorite book and give supporting reasons why.

I will assess students using the “words their way” assessment that I used at the start of the year. I will be identifying spelling strategies that individual students need to work on.

Vocabulary Words: smog, traffic, dump, smokestack, factory– these words come from the weekly read aloud text, please discuss these words at home

WRITER’S WORKSHOP:

We will continue with our unit on opinion writing. Students will develop their understanding of opinions vs. facts. Students will begin working on their favorite neighborhood place opinion writing.

MATH: This week we will start unit 8 in math. We will play I Spy with shapes using shapes defining and non-defining attributes as clues. Students will make shapes using straws and twist ties and will learn about characteristics of polygons and non-polygons. We will learn about equal shares and practice dividing shapes into halves and fourths.

Please use the fact triangles from the home links to practice addition and subtraction facts

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE: In science we will talk about characteristics of all living things. We will sort items into living and non living categories.  We will learn more about how we can care for the Earth. Students will assist in collecting trash around the schoolyard. We will also learn about the benefits of reducing, reusing and recycling.
