-Students have a new homework folder today.  Please sign the calendar nightly to show that you have gone over the work and looked at all the information inside.  The old green folders will now be used in science.

-Children are permitted to have “pop top” water bottles in the classroom.
-Please pay the $85 student fee.

-Birthday reminders:  We celebrate student birthdays on the last day of that month.  On this day, students are allowed to bring in a healthy snack or a little treat for the students (pencils, stickers).  We do not allow cupcakes.  In October, we have seven birthdays.  We will celebrate them all on October 31st

-School picture day in Tuesday, October 8th.

I will group the students according to our first Words their Way spelling assessment. Students will begin to work on a targeted spelling skill.
Sight Words: with, his, they, at, be
Children will be assessed monthly on word recognition only. Please have your child practice spelling these words if they can already read the words.

This week we will read Mr. Peabody’s Apples and will study vocabulary and themes from the text. Students will discuss character traits, major events in the story and the author’s purpose or lesson.

VOCABULARY OF THE WEEK: dedicated, curious, judge, diamond and thief.

The vocabulary booklets can be kept at home and studied during the week.  Your child should also be studying their sight words.  They should be able to read and spell all the words.  Students will be assessed on these words every other Friday.  At this time, there will be no formal assessment with vocabulary.

The students will continue to write narrative pieces focusing on stretching out unknown words, work spacing and punctuation. We will work on listening to a partner share and using the ABC chart and word wall for spelling.

This week, we will begin unit 2. Students will use 10 frames and play two-fisted penny to identify facts with sums of 10. We will have an exploration day on Wednesday and will play subtraction BINGO, rock, paper, scissors and tally items in the classroom.

We will continue to observe our grass.  We will also experiment with growing seeds in different environments.

We will discuss different types of families and the people who make them up. We will share what we like to do with our families and where our families live.
