READER’S WORKSHOP/Daily 5

This week we will read A Different Pond. This quarter first graders will hear many stories that feature diverse characters. We will identify story elements such as characters, setting, character development and author’s purpose. We will use the book to make predictions and inferences. Students will continue to identify character traits that support a growth mind set and perseverance.

Sight Words: long, very, little, words, after

Vocabulary: tackle, bait, callous, lure, trespass

WRITER’S WORKSHOP

We will complete our unit on How-To writing. After reviewing student samples I recognized that we needed to spend more time on this unit. I will also be putting more emphasis on handwriting and spelling words correctly.

MATH

This week, we will take the unit 5 assessment, originally planned for last Friday. We will begin unit 6 in math next week. The unit focuses on time using the hour hand only, more double digit number stories, doubles facts and near doubles.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE

In science we will complete an alternative STEM unit while we wait for our necessary supplies to arrive. We will learn about the accomplishments of Katherine Johnson, Stevie Wonder, Muhammad Ali and Steph Curry.
